What Is An Omnivent In A Camper?

Many motorhome and caravan dealerships mention that it has an omnivent, but what does omnivent mean? What actually is it? Is there any benefit by having one on my caravan or motorhome?

Well not to worry we’ll answer these questions for you.

What is an Omnivent?

An omnivent is a ventilated rooflight that is positioned on the ceiling of the recreational vehicle (either caravan or motorhome). It includes a vent to aid circulation throughout the vehicle.

They tend to include a blind as well to stop daylight from coming through into the van at night.

Types Of Omnivents

There are two types of omnivents, one with or one without a 12v fan, you also have the choice of dome shapes as well.

The 12v omnivents include a extractor fan to allow heat to escape and keep the van cool but some omnivens also have an option to pull in fresh air as well.

As for the standard omnivents (without the fans) are just a ventilators. It tends to have a rooflight to allow daylight to come in however, it also has a vents to allow fresh air to come in and out of the van. This type of omnivent isn’t powered by any electricity and so any air coming in is done naturally with the help of wind.

Why Have An Omnivent? What Are The Benefits?

Having an omnivent in your caravan or motorhome just stay more comfortable. An omnivent allows to fill your vehicle with plenty of fresh air and daylight, with the added benefit of not having water creep through. So this is perfect to stay cool no matter the weather.

If you don’t have an omnivent in your van, you can find yourself in a sticky situation. When the weather’s warm outside you’ll be sure to know about it in your van. Caravans and motorhomes can be like greenhouses in the summer. So having an omnivent is vital to making the van well ventilated and prevent it from being a stuffy environment.

Fortunately, most caravans and motorhomes are now manufactured with an omnivent as standard, so you won’t need to worry about this.

Are There Any Disadvantages To Having One?

One con to an omnivent is that when you turn them on they can be quite noisy. It isn’t something you’d turn on at night time. The neighbours will be wondering if an helicopter is pitching up next to them.

The other disadvantage is that they get really dirty and like most most extractor fans, they get a build up of grime and will need cleaning from time to time.
